Microchip Shortage: Outlook Improves
In its latest estimate, AutoForecast Solutions said 3.9 million vehicles have been cut by automakers worldwide this year, a slight improvement from the 3.93 million units it reported a week earlier. The numbers are a welcome reprieve for the industry. Looking ahead, microchip availability could improve next year as demand in other sectors eases, said Sam Fiorani, AFS vice president of global vehicle forecasting.
“Moving some of the production capacity to automotive chips could ease the tight supply and might shorten the production bottlenecks, possibly by the middle or late in the new year,” Fiorani wrote in an email.
Projections for loss by region are as follows:
- North America YTD – 1,396,100 (2022 Projected – 1,461,200)
- Europe YTD – 1,351,400 (2022 Projected – 1,520,000)
- Rest of Asia YTD – 749,400 (2022 Projected – 833,500)
- South America YTD – 190,100 (2022 Projected – 190,700)
- China YTD – 172,900 (2022 Projected – 221,300)
- Middle East/Africa YTD – 44,700 (2022 Projected – 49,600)
- Total YTD – 3,904,600 (2022 Projected – 4,276,200)
